The Best Survival Knife For You

The Best Survival Knife Options

There are a lot of great survival knives on the market right now and beyond the standard features of a good survival knife, the choice is based on your preference.

The Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) Razel SS7

Talk about bad ass, the brand new CRKT Razel SS7 is mean looking and has the functionality to back it up. It is a huge 13.8 ounces, has the look of a cleaver and the heft of a hatchet. The blade is 7.25 inches long with various serrations on the back side of the blade, a razor sharp chisel tip, and two points that are sharp at both angles of the point.

The great thing about this knife besides the obvious is that it has at THICK full tang blade at .25 inches. It also has a hardened steel glass breaker at the but of the knife and bottle opener.

The Gerber LMF II ASEK

The Gerber LMF II  is probably one of the most well known and tested survival knives that you can find. This knife was designed in close consultation with the military. ASEK stands for Aircrew Survival and Egress Knife. The Gerber LMF has been put to the test in Afghanistan and in Iraq over the last several years and has been highly praised by members of the military.
One of the reasons that this qualifies as the best survival knife on the market is because of its stats. It has a 4.84 inch blade that is serrated at the bottom half, it is made of 12c27 stainless steel and has a great handle. As the name suggests the blade is designed to cut through the fuselage of an aircraft. The LMF II has  a butt (Skullcrusher) that is designed to break glass, plexiglass and can be used as another business end of the knife in a hand to hand situation.

The blade also comes with one the best sheaths in the business. It is silent, meaning the knife does not rattle, it has a sharpener and has various options to be secured to a belt, leg or mole vest.

The Knife is available in 2 versions,  "ASEK" which comes with the safety knife shown below, and the "Infantry" which does not.  Prices range from $75 to $125, but as of February 2010, it has been selling in the low $60's, with sheath.  Amazon has the best prices that I have seen so far. The SOG Seal Pup M37

SOG makes exceptional equipment and the seal pup does not break that rule. The SOG M37-K Seal Pup
is a lighter more compact version of rhe Seal Knife 2000 or model S37. These knives were selected as the hiest ranked knife among Navy Seals. Priced in th $70 - $80 range you get a great knife without breaking the bank.
The handle is an often overlooked feature in a survival knife but SOG has nailed it with this one. The grip is very comfertable in multiple holding positions. The blade is made of AUS- 6 stainless steel and has a powdercoated finish. The blade length is 4.75 inches and the overall length of the knife is 9 inches.

The Seal Pup comes with a Kydex sheath that has a built in cord cutter. There are several options to attach it to a belt or attach it to a mole vest.SOG M37-K Seal Pup

The Tom Brown Tracker Knife

The Tom Brown Tracker Knife is the most expensive knife on my list but is, in my opinion the most impressive. The Tom Brown Tracker knife is 11.5 inches overall with a 2.5 inch carving blade, 3.5 inch chopping blade and a handle made from gray micarta. The Blade is a  beastly 1/4" inch thick 1095 high carbon alloy.
This Knife is designed to be the work horse of any survival situation. It is a heavy duty tool that is designed to be used like one. The top rounded part of the blade is designed to be used as a hatchet with three different hand positions along the handle for chopping.

The carving blade that is located on the first half of the blade from handle up, is adequate for just about any carving chores. It can also be used as a draw knife. The edge that connects the bottom carving portion of the blade with the chopping portion is a quarter rounder. It can be used to round the edges of a bow or to carve out a bow drill spindle. It is also designed to open the body cavity of large game.

There are endless uses for this knife and it is a great blade that can be passed down to your kids when you have no more use for it. At about $250 smackers it is the most expensive that I have outlined in this review but is possibly the most functional. As of right now Amazon has the best price on this blade. Ontario RTAK II ( Ar - Tack)

The Ontario RTACK II is a BIG and HEFTY blade, no way around it this thing is a massive survival knife. With a blade length at 10.25 inches made of 1090 steel it makes splitting wood extremely easy and works as good or better than any hatchet (because of the heft) that I have ever put to wood.

The one con of this blade is its weight (2.2lbs). It is one of those blades that is heavy, especially when you are hiking on long treks you will notice the extra weight. On the flip side, this is exactly the type of blade that you want with you when you get to your destination.  This is one of the best survival knife options for an extreme survivor. This knife handles, cutting firewood, shelter building, hunting and any other outdoor survival chore you can throw at it.

The edge keeping capability is phenomenal. This is one of the better 1095 blades that I have used as keeping an edge comes into play. You can chop all day long and still split hairs with this knife, it is impressive.
